I am looking to relocate to SA and would like to find a place near Lackland AFB. We are looking to spend around $200K on a house and hopefully be close to nice schools. We have a child that would be going to 1st grade next year and of course, not only schools, but safety is also a priority.
How is the traffic around the base and where would be an ideal place to live where we could get to work on time?

yeah, start looking at least 10 miles out. I work on Lackland and wouldn't want to live anywhere near it.

Same here, there are plenty of nice neighborhoods within a half hour of Lackland. I would say get outside of 1604 or at least not too far inside it!

Follow 90 West to 1604, then anything heading north on 1604 until it hits 281 will do.

do not move near Lackland. You will have to commute if you want a nice neighborhood and good schools.

Thank you guys!! Good to know to stay away from the close neighborhoods. I will look for something outside and far from it.

Outside loop 410, near or outside loop 1604, north of Marbach (look at about 8 o'clock on a map by 1604), west of 281 (look at about 12 o'clock on a map by 1604). Home prices are very good here compared to many areas but be sure to check out bcad.org for some property tax amounts. FYI, 1604 is more or less the dividing line between what is and what isn't in the city limits but its a jagged line and many areas outside 1604 are in the city while many aren't.

Now, I haven't been to every Air Force base in the US (probably been to 1/2 of them), but "generally" the bases are old and so are the surrounding neighborhoods. Military members tend to move away from the bases.

Default Lackland Indep School District

If you are an active duty family, why not consider base housing? The Lackland Independent School District K-12 is right on the base and serves ONLY families living on the base. Plus, it's one of the finest districts in the county and has small classroom sizes as well.
