Some good advice has already been doled out. The only thing I can add is to NEVER go to Geek Squad at Best Buy for any repair work.

They're overpriced, deluged with people all the time and you can get quicker, better repair elsewhere in town at a much cheaper cost.

Big box mass consumerism vs the small guy's ability to personalize the experience: The small guy always wins that fight, IMO.

Thanks for all the advise so far guys. Right now, I'm hoping a close friend that's "ITish" will be able to help (or be the one to open the thing up and clean it and all that like a previous poster was saying). If not, does anyone know of a place on the NE side of town, like maybe in or around The Forum Shopping Center? I live all the way in Cibolo, TX so even somewhere in New Braunfels would be a plus. Just to be more convenient to me.

I just got a blue screen error last night on my laptop for the first time. Fortunately my system automatically rebooted and when it requested I send the error info to Microsoft I got an immediate reply on what causes blue screen errors...device or faulty hardware. Which one is not is as easy to figure out but since I recently plugged in 2 new devices to my PC I quickly guessed it was one of them. Unplugged the devices and now everything is great again.

If it was a desktop unit that I needed to open up and clean-up or re-seat memory or cards I would do it. However I have not done much more than replace a CD/DVD drive on my laptop so I wouldn't feel as confident with that.

I agree Geek squad is a joke and overpriced.

What error code did the screen show? If you can see it, that is! Have you tried booting into safe mode?

I would like to second the above recommendations. I recently had a laptop issue and Jason was upfront with me with regards to not being able to service my particular model. I then took it the the laptop specialists on 151 and they correctly diagnosed the issue in a timely manner. Unfortunately the repair cost wasn't worth it but the diagnostic fee, parts, etc was in my mind very reasonable.

I know a guy in NB that I used to work for - I'll DM you his info. One of the best IMO.

I can't even started up on a safe mode cause the same thing just happens. Any savey IT people out there with some good advise??
What OS are you running?

If XP, boot to an XP install CD, select the repair option, and at the dos prompt select your windows installation and then type "chkdsk /P"

you owe me 50 bucks!

I know this is after the fact but for "future" reference (because it could happen again) invest in a backup program like Acronis True Image, buy a USB hard drive and use those two things to regularly backup your hard drive should this happen in the future.

When I recently had hard drive issues (not BSOD) I just opened up Acronis and reverted back to my partitioned image and within 30 minutes my computer was just like it was before the problems (all computer settings, fonts, programs and everything) So it literally saved me an entire day of reinstalling and redoing everything all over.

It's invaluable for any computer user
