I'm trying to get really creative... My mom has a gorgeous home in the beautiful New Braunfels area of Texas. New Braunfels is conveniently located between San Antonio and Austin.

We need her to come to California for a while. All the kids and grandkids live in So. Cal (Southbay/Beach Cities) area. We're hoping to have her here for a long visit, atleast 6 months, but preferably a year or two. She does not want to sell her house. It wouldn't make sense to do so anyway, because property is so expensive in Cali.

So, I thought I would post here, and propose a house swap. If anyone currently lives and owns a home in California and is thinking of moving to Texas, or has a job that is forcing a relocation, but you don't want to sell your house in California. Perhaps we could do a house swap/long term rental swap. My mom can spend some much needed time with the family in California, and you can come to Texas without having to sell your house.

My mom loves New Braunfels. I'd live there in a heartbeat if I could, but we can't move there to be with her right now. I know she doesn't want to permanently move to California...too crazy and stressful out here. But a long vacation will do her so much good.

I'm frustrated and want to help my mom.

I would recommend finding someone to manage the property while she is away and rent it out. That way she will be legally covered if the tenants do something to the place, and she can always return if she wants to (with proper notification).

House swapping may sound like a good solution, but to be honest I think your chances of finding someone to do so are slim to none. However, renting could turn out to be a viable solution. When we moved to Germany in the mid-90s, we couldn't sell two condos we had up near Baltimore so we ended up renting them out. It turned out to be a profitable venture, versus the loss we would have had to absorb had we sold them at the market value at the time...

Good luck!

Cheers! M2

Completely agree with that,
I know a person that got in contact with a real estate agency that had a lot of apartment and houses for rent where we lived.

Read the contract carefully,
at some point he wanted to rent me his house and he couldn't do it because the contract said that the peopl renting could stay there as long as they wanted to.
