I'm not too familiar with this, so any hints, tips would be appreciated. Couldn't seem to find a good travel agent that isn't only into cruises etc..so we thought of just booking each ticket separate (cause the muliple way seems to cost wayyy more).

I use kayak.com. Southwest is pretty good when it comes to multiple-city trips, so check them out.

I use the techniques described here to search for airfare deals. Your biggest problem is that California is almost always expensive to get to. It's a popular destination from San Antonio.

FWIW, I have flown from SAT to LAX or ONT on countless occasions, and have never spent more than $100 or so each way. Sometimes you just need to find the right flight/day combination.

Will you be flying first class, or sardine class?

Southwest is always the cheapest for us. Also, especially around peak travel flying in/out of Austin seems to always be much cheaper.
