I heard someone mention this on the radio the other day. It might have been the KISS morning show but I'm not sure. Anyway, this local radio personality or guest described the Medical Center as the "most cosmopolitan part of San Antonio."

Why would someone think that?

What type of conveniences does the area have, other than medical operations? Really. A few fast food restaurants.

I'm not getting it. But I'm open to hear anyone's reasoning.

Okay, never mind. I misunderstood what the word meant. (Just looked it up.)

I'd never thought of the meaning of the word much, though. Kind of a new idea to me.

I would agree with KISS...the med center is probably the most cosmopolitan part of San Antonio. Cosmopolitian doesnt mean upscale or trendy...it simply means...where lots of cultures and ethnicities come together....which is exactly what all the med center apartments and restuarants have become. You will see lots of Middle Eastern, Indian, native African, and various Asian cultural influences in this area.

And on a personal side note...my favorite culture of all: Hot Chicks! with the Hooters and Bikninis restaurants both located in the med center!

Thanks for the explanation. That makes sense.

I was thinking of the word metropolitan, rather than upscale/trendy.

We can thank Cosmopolitan Magazine for the trendy, upscale, sex-in-the-city image. I can remember reading Cosmo in college, and there was nothing multicultural about it. Lipstick, glamour, hot fashions, beauty tips with that cutting edge look.....not multicultural at all. Cosmo magazine hasn't changed much with he exception of pushing the envelope on all of the above.

I happen to like the idea of discussing the "cosmopolitan"ness of the Medical Center area.

I never really thought about it that way...you really do see a ton of different people in that area. There are lots of doctors (of varying ethnicities due to the UTHSC campus), call center employees (thus contractors), some section 8 housing areas, college students, young families, some older people who have always lived in the area, etc.

If you go even a tad bit north of the Medical Center it gets very suburban and if you move south it gets a bit more urban...so it's an interesting concept.

I think it's just another way to discuss "what type of people live in X area..." it's hard to pinpoint because so many people do live in that area. This could be very helpful for people considering moving there.

Some posts above were deleted. This topic is local and within the rules for the forum. Many of the posts above would be helpful to someone relocating to San Antonio who knows nothing about the Medical Center area. Thanks Bowie.

I love the medical center area - it's "my" part of San Antonio, having lived here for 13 years and worked at the HSC for 5 years. One of my favorite things about the area is the diversity - including in the choice of restaurants!

So, yes, based on dictionary.com's definition of "cosmopolitan" I would say the area fits that description.
