Where are the best surrounding areas to live for a couple in their late 30s with 2 kids (first grader and toddler)? Schools are very important. Friendly neighborhood is important. We would be renting and our budget is $3500 or less...

Rancho Cucamonga is the closest. I'm partial to Chino Hills but it's a longer commute (about 25-30 minutes.) Both have among the best public schools that you will find in the Inland Empire.

With your budget, you could find something very nice in Rancho Cucamonga. You could easily find a friendly neighborhood (most of the city is very clean and safe) that would be good for your family and your commute would be easy.

+1 Chino Hills. I love that place. I've lived there way back and that would be my first choice if you moved to the IE. Not a fan of Rancho Cucamonga , as I grew up there and visit often.. the amount of homie gangsta riff raff congregate there thanks to the malls, makes it unappealing of an area to live, imo. RC or Chino Hills would be first choices.
