Just saw that the new line to Perris is in the works that will connect it to the rest of the Riverside area. What about Palm Springs/Desert? From what I understand, it is very expensive to upgrade existing railroads..

I'm hoping they extend the line south to Temecula. We were supposed to get that back in 2010.

There is some traction (no pun intended) as far as extending the San Bernardino Metrolink line to Redlands:

Sorry, I realize that the map is a bit small.

Anyway, I believe that phase one will be the extension of the line to downtown Redlands and on to the University of Redlands, with some intermediate stops.

It won't happen overnight, though. That former AT&SF line will need much improvement for commuter passenger service, since it's been used only for freight operations for a few decades. In fact, I don't believe there is any revenue traffic beyond some light industry in south San Bernardino, if even that is still viable. There are small palm trees growing between the rails in a few places that I know of in the Redlands area. Beyond Judson Street in Redlands, to the east, the tracks have been removed. The right-of-way is still visible, though, even out in Mentone.

To extend service from Riverside to the Palm Springs area would involve acquiring property and laying entirely new track.
Amtrak currently operates long-distance passenger service from LA to Palm Springs and beyond, but it's only three days a week, there are no intermediate stops between Ontario and Palm Springs, the on-time record is not great and the "station" in Palm Springs is the basic "Amshack" out in the middle of nowhere.

I'm looking forward to service between Riverside and Perris, though. Plans are underway for the demonstration trains to run from the Perris depot to the Orange Empire Railway Museum.
