Heres a question for anyone who either works at, or knows the Calif DMV. Ive looked for the answer on the website but cant seem to find a direct link to the question in mind.
I know that with a regular license, transferring from another state to Calif you have to take a written test. But, to transfer from another state to Calif, with a CDL, will a person have to hire a road test person or is it also only a written test (including the endorsements)? Anyone know for sure?

Your best bet is to call the DMV directly to verify, but reading through the information on how to get a California Commercial Driver's License which is available on this DMV page: https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/detail/dl/dl_info#CDL

the instructions seem pretty clear.

The page then outlines all of the steps required for the California CDL, including the need to pass a test for the class of vehicle you want to qualify to drive.

So, yes, it sounds like a test will be required as well as a 10 year background check, a vision test, and the other listed items if you want a Calif. CDL.

But again, the best thing to do is to call the California DMV to ask them directly. The number is on the link above.

I remember having to go to a completely different DMV in CA that handled CDL issues only. They would not answer questions on the phone. I lived in North San Diego Co. & had to drive over 50 miles to a DMV CDL-only office in El Cajon. I had a Class A CDL with all endorsements.

When I moved to WA, I actually had to physically surrender my CA CDL, was re-issued a WA CDL, my HazMat endorsement was taken & I was told I would have to re-test for HazMat, in Seattle, over 100 miles away, plus pay for another TSA clearance, which is, as you know, expensive. Washington is not as controlling and rigid as CA, so good luck.
