Hmmm...I'd just wait for the Census 2010 to come out. That's the only source I would actually trust.

http://www.dof.ca.gov/research/demographic/reports/estimates/e-1/2009-10/documents/E-1_2010-Press_Release.pdf (broken link)

The state Department of Finance estimate puts the population of San Diego for 2009 at 1,376,173, growing 1.3% over the previous year. The actual 2010 census number will probably be less, as the enumerators are required to find actual live bodies, as opposed to making estimates.

Still, San Diego is growing smartly. Population growth is supposed to peter out by mid century, but estimates for 2050 are probably in the 1.6 to 1.75 million range within the city limits. Most of that growth will either happen in the SR-56/Carmel Valley area in the north, more large apartment complexes in Mission Valley or condo high-rises Downtown. Downtown alone is supposed to take 50,000+ additional people.

Established neighborhoods that had previously been designated for redevelopment into Huffman style apartment areas are removing a lot of the density from their community plans as the opportunity arises. Still there are other areas that are willing to take density in order to get rid of the stuff that's been built that they wish would go away.

I would've put that too. There are other threads I posted that said San Diego has over 1,400,000. I would've said the Census 2010 prediction population of San Diego was 1,409,875 . But I would say in the range of 1,340,000 if the US Census was correct. But I think that's true of the 1.4 million .

San Diego Population - US Census 1,339,732 - CA DOF 1,409,875

Oh, and I say the population of the county (and the metro) is 3,050,000 to around 3,300,000.

Eh? Are you already in the city of Chula Vista. Yeah. Like how do I know? I live in San Diego. And what? 1,339,731 is almost at 1,339,732.
