We're moving to Dallas - I, I, I'm speechless! It looks like June will see me landing in California only to take pick up my car and head East!

Gloom, Dispair, Agony on Me........

Well except for the awful weather, you might be surprised. DAllas isn't nearly as bad as you are making it out to be. How often have you been there, what do you think it will be like, and have you reasons to form such a negative feeling? The more you dread the move the worse it will be..Look forward to a new experience and make sure, when you get there you don't tell everyone how much you hate it. That will be a srue turnoff.

I can only tell you that my husband's company transferred him to Yuma AZ once. We only lived there 18 months, but you just get involved in your community and everywhere has it's good points. Granted, had we thought Yuma would be permanent . . . but they told us at the time it would be 18 months to two years max. That did make it easier. Certainly Dallas is better than Yuma, AZ.

I've lived in Dallas before and it is actually quite nice! But my focus over these past months has been SD. I'm a Californian and really would like to return; San Diego is an ideal spot for me. However, the family and financial situation has to be considered. We, in the final analysis make the decision together.
My overly dramatic opening to my OP, was just that overly dramatic.

Dallas is a great place to retire. I used to live there. Cheap housing, no income tax, and very family-oriented. We found the negatives to be unpredictable weather, summer humidity, lots of bugs, and a lack of things to do.

same thing when we changed companies and relocated to Eureka, Ca. No, it certainly wasn't for us, but we did enjoy the year plus we spent there. We found some good people, a couple of great and or fun dining, good frest crab, beautiful scenery. Anyplace has positives. Those who can not see the good will spend their time miserable.

ok, that explains it. Go, enjoy and maybe eventually you will end up in San Diego. Good luck.

Well Dallas and San Diego are like night and day. I've actually lived in Dallas before. I absolutely hated the weather as the summers are brutal. I was single at the time. Now that I have 2 kids I can appreciate more parts of the city. The Park Cities area (Highland Park and University Park) are quite nice with great schools. Some of the suburbs like Plano are nice.

GREAT restaurants, GREAT shopping (tons of upscale shopping malls), no State income tax, housing is VERY cheap compared to San Diego (except the Park Cities area), the economy is doing well and the cost of living is cheap. It's also a really safe city and the people are friendly.

On the downside, it's super flat, no natural beauty compared to San Diego. But it's like comparing apples to oranges... but I can think of a LOT worse cities to be relocated to than Dallas.

Have a great move.
