My girlfriend are I (lesbian couple) are moving from Boston to the west coast (95% certain on California ). We are both 27 years old, social creatures, without kids.

We need a little help though...

Criteria:
- Lesbian friendly/an abundant lesbian nightlife
- Good, sunny weather
- Reasonably priced houses/apmts
- Low crime rates

In the lineup are:
- San Fran Bay Area (thinking Oakland). But is San Fran just guy gay???
- San Diego. Is the pace too slow??? We are used to the fast paced Boston living/working. Is Hillcrest just guy gay??

Is Los Angeles out of the question? I'm not saying that San Diego doesn't have a lesbian community because it does, it is a little slow though. If you guys want the option for an abundant night life I would pick Los Angeles or San Fran. You should really visit though because Northern CA and Southern CA can feel like two different worlds.

I don't think San Diego has a strictly Lesbian club or district, maybe in hillcrest?....San Diego is so diverse and I love it, I ate at little Italy for lunch, then the day before that I had Vietnamese food
Sunny weather? so-cal is the place to be, except for now(we're expecting rain)...Rent is pretty pricey down south, but you get what you pay for,as in cheap rent will = not so great neighborhood.
You do not want to live in Oakland (180 homicide in a year) or SF(too expensive)
Just a question though, why do you want to live in a gay only environment? Your going to miss the beauty of California if you do

Both of you ladies would do fine in SD, but it is a bit slower than Boston. Hillcrest, University Heights, North Park, all full of breeders/ non-breeders/ hipsters with bars, clubs, shops, etc.

Depends on where you live in Oakland. I know a lesbian couple who live in a super house in the Oakland Hills. Of course it is valued at about $1,000.000. Oakland is a city with a lot of diversity.

Unless you just have to walk from your front door to the clubs, I would live in Berkeley and hang out in SF or Oakland when I felt like it. SF moves at more of an East Coast pace than any CA city I've been in.

I've lived in Berkeley, Banker's Hill (next to Hillcrest in SD), and LA and that would be my recommendation based on your requirements.

I agree with barbieart! I have relatives in northern and southern cali and have visited both a few times. San Diego has more of a laid-back vibe. SF reminds me a little bit of NYC cause of how you can get around without a car if you live in the downtown areas. I'm not a fan of LA even though the weather is great like SD but if you and your girl like to go out a lot and prefer being in southern cali than pick Los Angeles. My friends that visit southern cali say the night life in LA is more to their liking

I have lots of lesbo friends from Boston that have relocated to LA area. They are always going out; most are in the entertainment business so they're into clubbing, etc. But there seems to be a much stronger community in LA.
