I'm considering a move to San Diego in the fall and was wondering which of the neighborhoods I've been looking at are the safest. Since I want to live in an area within walking distance (and short driving distance) of things to do while maintaining a reasonable rent (around 1500 for a 2 bedroom), I've been looking at North Park, University Heights and Normal Heights although my basic impression from reading this forum is stay west of 805 and relatively close to Balboa Park. Which of these would be considered the safest and are there any other neighborhoods I should be considering in terms of decent rent/low crime/things to do? Thanks in advance.

Those areas are OK. North Park has some areas that aren't nice but generally it's a good neighborhood. During the '80s it seemed to change.

Don't hold too fast to the idea that closer to the park is the only acceptable location. Anything north of Adams is good too. And the area of University Heights bounded by Adams, Park, Texas and El Cajon Boulevard is in general quite acceptable if you give yourself some buffer between yourself and the main roads.

North Park between University and El Cajon Boulevard, just east of Park Boulevard has seen a lot of new construction either built or being built that may affect that area for the better.

Kensington is nice, too...not sure about the rents, though.

Little Italy downtown would be fun for you, as well as other neighborhoods already mentioned ( and they're not ghetto) Normal Heights, North Park, Hillcrest, University Heights. All have parks, coffee shops, restaurants, funky shopping.
