I would possibly be moving from Chicago (am torn between SF and SD) and am looking for a 2br or 1br + office. I would really prefer to rent a single family home, but haven't found much in my price range. It would be my gf and I, we would have 2 cars, and would prefer a garage or storage area, and to live somewhere where it's not a pain in the ass to move bikes/surfboards/etc from your living space to your cars.

On a visit to scope out neighborhoods I really liked La Jolla, Pacific Beach, and Encinitas. I do want to be close to the beach and preferably a surf break that works under most conditions.

One other thing, why do all rentals in SD have carpet everywhere? It seems so weird to me - in Chicago everything is hardwood with ceramic in kitchens/bathrooms. You MIGHT find carpet in bedrooms, but that's it.

ha ha I am a carpet phobic too. All those cheapy rentals (you are are in "cheapy" range for beach houses BTW) have carpet....maybe you can find some tile here and there. Some of the older neighborhoods are much better about not having carpet, but they are not on the beach-yet they are in your price range and pretty cool areas. These neighborhoods would include:North Park, South Park, Bankers Hill, University heights...sure I am missing some. You might need to suck it up and rent a condo...some are redone in hardwood and many have garage parking-at least for one....you can't put one on the street? Its now like you need to scrape ice or walk in the snow... and the auto theft is not as bad as a lot of other cities

edit/add: if you think you can go condo, check out bird rock-it is essentially north PB/South La Jolla. You could get a condo in your price range...maybe 2 car garage, maybe no carpet-all if you were lucky...If I hadn't just signed another lease I would be fighting you for it.

I just moved to SD six months ago with the wifey and 2K is probably where you need to be to find something close to decent. I have been renting in a complex but want to move to a SFH and we have been looking in the 1600-1800 price range and so far all the stuff has been run down. I miss Chicago prices
