My husband and I will be in San Diego for one night and two days.. can anyone help us out?

I am looking to book a hotel.. which area is bettter?
- Mission Valley/ Hotel Circle
- Gas Lamp North
- Gas Lamp South
- Downtown Harbor Island

Also, what are some things we MUST see while in SD? We already plan to catch a Padres game..

Any info and advice is appreciated!

Also, traveling to LA.. anything I should know about that? Mapquest says it takes about 2hrs..

Thanks, Jill

Hey Jill,

I'm not sure how much you can fit into one day/night but plenty to see and do. Maybe a special dinner out. George's at the Cove in La Jolla (http://www.georgesatthecove.com/ ) is really great and romantic if you get a table on the balcony and go at sunset if you can.

A few months ago before I moved here, I flew here to close on my house and I booked the Andaz Hotel downtown and it was GREAT.

Downtown San Diego Hotels- Gaslamp Quarter Hotel- Andaz San Diego Near Convention Center

Really hip hotel with great rooms and great amenities and extras. Staff was really great too. Tons of great bars and restaurants in the area (I had a great dinner at Quarter Kitchen) really close.

I guess what all you do depends on what type of people you are and what activities you enjoy but I'm sure a great hotel and a good meal is going to be important and I'd recommend the Andaz...it was great.

I would book a downtown hotel if the cost doesn't put you out. That will eliminate any hassles involved with getting to the Padres game (parking/getting lost etc). And if you decide not to drive once you are ensconced in your hotel room, you will have more options of things to do Downtown - Gaslamp Restaurants, Harbor Cruise, Ferry to Coronado. But there are many other things to do around town, so don't feel that Downtown is all there is.

Regarding driving to LA, that 2 hours estimate is only valid if you leave San Diego between 7pm and 5am. If you leave between 10 am and 2 pm you might make it in 2 1/2 hours. If you leave during any other times of the day (the rush hours), your trip could last between 2 1/2 hours to 4 hours. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!

Kettlepot, great advice.

Earlyretirement, staying Downtown makes perfect sense if all you have is one night, but if you can spend 4-5 hours going to LA next day, consider going up the coast on 101, not I-5. Start in La Jolla, spend about an hour walking along the water, and checking out the stores on Prospect and Girard; then head north to Del Mar (if you have an extra 30 minutes, allow yourself to go up to Torrey Pines and take a little hike out to the edge of the bluffs over Black's Beach), and further up the coast through Solana Beach, Encinitas, and Carlsbad. All the little towns have nice beaches and shopping areas, and the ocean views are incredible. From Carlsbad you can get back on I-5 (and skip Oceanside, sorry, it wasn't all that charming last time I passed through) and head north through Pendleton, but after San Clemente look for the Coast Cities exit and continue along the water through Laguna Beach. You can go all the way to Newport Beach and even Long Beach that way, but it can get congested past Newport Beach. So take 55 from NB to I-405 and take your chances with rush hour traffic--all depending on where you're going in LA.

If you don't want to follow the coast road through Laguna, take a break in San Juan Capistrano along I-5 instead and see the old mission and the nice, restored downtown area. Good restaurants!
