Hi, my work is offering to move to SD/Tijuana area. (work is in Tijuana). i have three young children who attend catholic school in Toronto. i have been reading alot about Chula Vista (eastlake area) can somebody help me with this. i need to know where to rent a house for now which is safe for children and do i have to pay extra catholic schools? (how much?) Although i have not discussed a salary for me, what kind of yearly/monthly salary do i need to have to live comfortably in SD area? any other info you have is greatly appreciated. thanks.

I'm from London, ON and currently live near Eastlake. It's really family-friendly, but it's VASTLY different from Toronto. Rent would probably run you 1800 to 2500/month, but with the high foreclosure rates in eastern Chula Vista (Eastlake), you may be able to score yourself a deal. Virtually everything else can be bought cheaper in CV than in Toronto (especially food, if you shop at Henry's Farmer's Market), but rent is very expensive. There are no religious public schools here; if you want Catholic schools, you're going to have to pay dearly for private schools. I've heard that the public schools here are good, though.

How is it vastly different than Toronto? Well, it has no character, it's sunny all the time, and everything seems fake (I don't mean that negatively, but it's true). But again, it's very safe and family friendly.

As for getting to Tijuana, you'd be travelling over the Otay Mesa crossing. Getting into Mexico won't be a problem, but getting out will be. Border waits at peak times can be 1 to 2 hours long. Getting to Otay from Eastlake is fairly simple though, and a new freeway opening next month will give a direct connection. If you have any other questions, PM me.
