Hello!

Moving to San Diego this summer. I'm buying a new car prior to my move.

I'm looking for something that is fun to drive, but gets great gas mileage. I've owned a Mazda Protege before, and I cannot lie - it was the funnest car I've ever owned! But I hated how loud and uncomfortable it was on the freeway.. Zoom-zoom is fun, but do I have to hear every groan and purr my engine makes? Sheesh.

I rented a Ford Focus the last time I was in San Diego, and totally hated it at first: The thing switches gears so fast, it kinda throws you off at first. But it sure was fun to drive, and suited San Diego well.

I am considering a Prius, one of the bigger models, but I gotta be honest - it did not seem fun to drive at all...

IN YOUR OPINION: What's a good Economy Car to own and drive in San Diego?

I love my Focus ZX3. Can't speak to the shifting thing, though, as I only drive cars with a manual transmission..

Fun to drive and good on gas really don't go hand in hand. My BMW did pretty good so long as you could keep your foot out of it but that wasn't easy. Even a 1.4L engine will suck gas if you are driving it hard.

The best car to drive in San Diego is one that is completely paid for.

I totally agree! You can't do any better than a completely paid for car.

I took a 2013 Ford Focus for a spin and it was a LOT of fun. Great handling and gas mileage is supposed to be around 38mpg.

However I wouldnt buy one as I am a bit too big for the car at 6'3

Honda Civic Si.

On the down side, Hondas are popular with thieves and SD is tops in car theft.

The new Mazda 6 is turning heads, great MPG (upper 30s) with sweet styling. Car and Driver gave it the nod over the new Honda Accord.

You're in sunny SoCal, so drop the top! If you could live with a 2-seater, I'd go Miata. Not the cheapest brand new, but you could always go used. They're reliable and a total blast to drive (so I've been told. I don't actually fit).

Absolutely a paid off car is the best kind of car to drive!

I don't know about the VW Golf but I will comment that the TDI clean burning diesel cars are really great with great gas mileage! I've never owned a TDI car before my Audi Q7 TDI and really amazed with the mileage.

I'd highly recommend a TDI diesel if they have it in the model you want. Great gas mileage.
