What is disturbing about this thread is the mentality that if we can't work we will go panhandle. Never at any time in my life have i ever contemplated homelessness. I have always found jobs to support myself even if i only had beans and rice to eat. Unless a person is mentally ill, then you can find a job and a dwelling place within your budget.

There are so many opportunities in America today. Job training and job boards are all over California. I am not sure how it is in other states but most likely equivalent. Also, a twenty year-old should have some sense of what their skills are and jobs that meet those skill sets OR you are working to some employment goal. Don't just throw up your hands and say,"Well, i guess i will be homeless."

In addition, this Forum is such a great resource for cost of living comparisons, climate and economic viability of an area. You don't just pick an expensive area such as San Diego and jump on in. A recipe for personal disaster.

But Caraway's point was it's hard to give good advice if you don't have more background details about the person's life.
