Hey all: I'm a Rhode Islander hoping to escape my freezing neck of the woods for jan - april, more or less, and, as a surfer, I'm hoping to find a place anywhere from Ocean Beach up to a little past Encinitas, with Encinitas being my ideal location. I only have $1k to $1.5k / mo to spend. I know, I know, a pittance in the scheme of all things SD, but what I want to know is: do I have any chance at all of finding a place, if not of my own, then perhaps a share? And, if so, how best could I accomplish such a thing from all the way across the country? Or is it even possible?

In terms of being a tenant, I'd like to think there are few better. I have no unseemly habits, could come w/ my little non-sheeding dog or not, am a gainfully employed writer who works at home (and could thus take care of someone else's pets, if they had any), and all I really want to do is eat, sleep, write and surf. I'm a little beyond middle aged and very very laid back. What do you think? Think the area has a room for one like me?

Thanks for any help you can offer!

For sure you can find something in that price range. It probably won't be huge (aka 1 bedroom or studio) or have ocean views but you can definitely live by yourself at ~1500 a month in Encinitas as long as your expectations are reasonable.

As far as lining up a place before you move, I don't have any good advice to give. Maybe try and find some places for rent by owner on craigslist and give them a months deposit right before you move here

a share, yes. A dump studio alone, maybe. Expect to compete with lots and lots of people for it.

It's doable in Encinitas if you stick to Leucadia or Village Park, I'd also consider La Costa. There are quite a few rentals along La Costa Ave. that are close to the beach and are basically Encinitas.

What's the big deal about living in Encinitas?

Hi, all -- thanks for weighing in. Leucadia would be perfect for me. I'll look at those other areas, too. And by $1500 / mo, I meant in rent alone, not total to live on.

I think Sassberto has hit on one of the problems I'll have -- the competition in that price range and the fact that I'll be competing from more than 3000 miles away. Kinda cuts down on my chances.

Why Encinitas? In my case, it's because of the surf. Tourmaline / Ocean Beach area would work, too. Think I'd have a better chance there?

I don't know, but if I didn't live in Cardiff I'd probably want to live in OB honestly. Try seeing what you can find in Encinitas first. There are a lot of good breaks along "the miracle mile" especially if you ride a longer board

YES but you will be living in a crappy apartment complex. Just look up reviews for ESSEX HEIGHTS Apartments. You wont be happy. Your best bet is to search Craigslist for individual owners renting out rooms or other types of personal property.

Dont be a smoker. YOU WILL be very unhappy
