I like going to the Filipino bakeries there- hard to find a Valerios in other parts of SD. Good Chinese food too.

I would check it out and see how you see the area, then go with your instincts. In that area there are mostly families. I have alot of Filipino friends and hang out there often. I was just there this weekend at a soccer game and then went for Chinese food after on Plaza Blvd. Its a pretty normal place.

I wouldn't solely go by the opinions of people on CD.
This is true. It all depends on what you want.

This is also true, and not just of National City.

If you read the OP's post, it states, "need to be near the base." My street is a side street off of another side street directly across from the base, and a five minute walk from National City, and that doesn't include Mission Valley.

I wouldn't consider living there because there's not much to do, it's far away from anything, and it doesn't have the amenities I look for in a neighborhood. The OP just wanted to know if it's safe, and stated that they're not looking for anything "fancy". Whether or not I (or you) would want to live there is irrelevant unless you specifically outline why so that the OP can decide if those reasons apply to them.

The OP stated close to the base, and National City is close to the base. It's not fancy, but it's also close to all of the shopping that's everywhere else, but it just happens to be in National City.

For myself, I don't need amenities, I prefer the convenience, and being close to where I work.
