Just moved from Del Mar to Vista and I get ZERO broadcast TV stations. Apparently the signals are just terrible here (search 92084 at The Digital TV Transition: Reception Maps). Are there any tips and tricks to make this work? I'm not paying $45 a month for cable just to get stations that should be free.

Are you using an amplified antenna?
I am planning to cut cable in the next day or two.

In preparation, I dug out an old amplified antenna I already had (20 dB gain), ran it through a ChannelMaster 7777 (30 dB gain), and plugged its output into the existing cable distribution box that Time Warner's cable is currently feeding.

With that experiment, I was able to get pretty much all the San Diego stations (except ch. 6 in Tijuana), and as a bonus, picked up a number of Los Angeles stations.

I'm located in the Carmel Valley area, NOT on a hill. Antennaweb.org is the website I used to determine direction and distance to the local stations.

Edit - just plugged 92084 into the antennaweb.org site - yup, you're kinda screwed - what is that area - at the bottom of a canyon or something?

Vista's pretty flat, surrounded by some elevated areas, but it doesn't seem that dramatic to me. Apparently, it's enough, though.

I'd happily buy a roof antenna if I thought it would work.

Well - re-entering 92084 at antennaweb.org, with (antenna height of 30' or higher selected), gets you CBS and ABC, apparently.

My guess is, you won't know for sure until you actually try (e.g. I was pleasantly surprised to discover I receive a handful of Los Angeles stations - certainly not predicted by antennaweb).

Unfortunately, that means spending the $ upfront without knowing what you'll get until afterwards. Probably for sure CBS and ABC, though.

As an experiment, I bought an amplified OTA antenna from costco last month to try this.

I didn't get a single station. Not one.

Guess I'm keeping Directv.
