I live in Escondido, and about 22:15 tonight I heard a huge airplane engine rumble sound, but then shut off to nothing then restart loud again after maybe 5 seconds…it did at least 10 times…Couldn't see any lights in the sky either…this went on for about 5 minutes.

I believe one of the government contractors has a wind tunnel somewhere in RB. You might have heard playing around in that. Otherwise, we noticed that the noise of jets from Miramar is insanely loud due to cloud cover, and they're completely hidden above the clouds.

I've hear something similar in the Mira Mesa area fairly often. Still not sure what it is, sounds like a jet but the sound will stop on a dime, then start again. Pretty strange. It's not like it sounds normally (gradually fading) it will be full force closeby sounding, then stop.

Thanks for response Oddstray, it could be a wind tunnel…but would that sort of machine be able to stop sound on a dime, then turn back on full blast? Interesting that you live near Mira Mesa OpenMind11…wonder if his theory about jets is more correct. Anyone else got any ideas or heard this sound before?

Wind tunnel stop on a dime? Sure. Why not? But it could also easily be jets.

I worked in RB before I retired and often heard that sound.

While the sounds I've heard don't sound horn like, I always think of this when I hear the sounds since to me I'm not convinced its a jet I'm hearing. Its loud and all, but not quite the same as what the typical jets sound like, and living in Mira Mesa, I hear them all the time.

Whatever the case, its certainly interesting and something to let your imagination run wild with.
