We have a close family member living with us forever. I no longer can afford to have this person in our home, they only pay a little over a quarter of the total rent due. The lease is coming up for renewal but we want to downsize and not take this person with us.

Which is it, you want to ask this person to move out of the house where you all live now, or you're going to be moving and don't want to take him/her along? Those are two very different situations. If the latter, it's relatively simple--you're downsizing and very regrettably won't have an extra room.

Yes, we're moving from our present residence. I guess I need to be reassured that it's ok not to take this person with us.

It's OK.

(That said, if you have any concerns about this person reacting violently when you tell them, you might want to arrange to have a neutral third party be present when you break the news).

I don't want to say too much because of my situation. He is an adult father figure.

Does he have access to weapons?

Give them written notice that they will no longer be able to live with you after a certain date then change your locks. Tell them it is not debatable!

No access to weapons, thank goodness. Written notice, great idea! Thank you!

Again, if you have any concerns about physical or verbal violence (and it doesn't have to involve weapons) protect yourself and the rest of your family, even if you give notice in writing. If that is the case, it might be smart to not give him your new address when you move.

Hopefully, this is not a concern, and everything will go smoothly. But either way, don't feel guilty about your decision.
