I bought online. I decided even 1 hour in a store laying on a bed proves nothing. Online or in store, most give 90-120 day trial period. I ended up trying a Loom & Leaf online and have had since January and make final decision in 2 weeks whether to keep or not (am keeping).

When we were moving around a lot, we got a cheap queen memory foam mattress for less than $200 online. It's actually quite comfortable. When this wears out we'll either go to Costco or buy from one of the upscale online places (tuft & needle or caspar).

Definitely recommend the latex foam mattresses, which can ship online in amazingly small form due to vacuum packaging. I can't do regular memory foam -- it makes me roasting hot.

Sleep Bedder on El Cajon blvd & Utah. Locally owned small business, hang out and lie around on the mattress as long as you want to try it out, they'll bring you tea even. They deliver and will remove your old mattress. I bought a bamboo memory foam mattress from them last year for $600 last year and it's the best thing I've ever slept on.

What's cool about the air bed is each side can set the firmness. My wife's side is like laying on a door. My side is pretty spongy.

For moving around and high value, I found the firm foam mattresses from Ikea quite satisfactory. They sell 'em rolled up so fit in car.
In contrast, I returned a Costco in-store mattress as too soft - I think Costco does not get the best high-end mattresses, though Costco is quite good in other categories.
For a high-end firm mattress, we got lucky as a neighbor just gave us their barely used spring (b/c it didn't suit them for their backs), and it is superb, though I would need to check make/model (but likely something like a high-end Sealey).
Once got a twin mattress and like Pottery Barn or Willems-Sonoma or something like that, and it was not best, as too soft.

Thanks for all your suggestions! Seems less complicated these days to buy a car than a mattress!

You've got that right! I've been through ~7 mattresses in 3-4 years and only 2 cars during that time!

Believe me, I'm the last person you want mattress recommendations from!

My shopping recommendations:

1. Spend plenty of time lying on mattresses in the same position that you normally sleep while wearing comfortable, loose clothes (i.e. gym clothes). Don't be afraid to close your eyes and spend 20 minutes on a mattress that feels good.

2. Buy from somewhere with a good return policy. I've returned multiple mattresses within 90 days of purchase. No matter how good it feels in the store, sleeping on it every night for 2 weeks tells a whole different story.

3. Don't expect most mainstream mattresses to last very long. The foam used in today's mattresses is cheap and the markup on mainstream models is ENORMOUS. As a result, many mainstream mattresses develop impressions and even deep valleys in many cases after ~2 years.
