Some people on social media from other parts of the country seem to get nostalgic about drive in theatres as they are thing of the past in most other parts of the country, yet here in San Diego County we have two of them. One in South San Diego and one in East County. Both of which are swap meets (flea markets) by day and both of which appear to have been operating for many years.

South Bay Drive In Theatre & Santee Drive In Theatre

Do you ever go to either of our drive-ins? How often? What's the first movie you saw there? What's the last movie you saw there? I'm also curious how you suppose both of our drive in theatres have managed to survive all these years despite decline in popularity of these on a national level.

The last time we went to the drive in theatre down in IB we saw the Hunger Games. I'm not really into movies but we went on a lark to check it out. Jennifer Lawrence in the leather outfit on the big screen was pretty hot though. When I was a kid we used to go to the one on Midway by the old Post Office.

I grew up in San Diego, so as a teenager/ young adult I've been to pretty much all of them. Last one we went to was Santee.
Went with our kids and their girlfriends/ boy friends. Three vehicles, beach chairs, used the car stereos (a little on the loud side, but we were parked away from most other cars). We picked up pizza and soda on the way. Had a blast.
We watched Godzilla!

I had no idea there used to be a third drive in. I will have to look it up to see when it closed. I too rarely go to the movies and since I've been in San Diego (15 years), I've only been once to the Mission Valley AMC, once to the Fashion Valley theatre and then another time to the one in the Gaslamp. New Hollywood movies just aren't my thing, but since I now have kids and live near the Santee drive inn, I find myself at the drive-in at least 2 or 3 times a year mostly for kid movies.

The drive inn is a very fun and economical form of an evening of entertainment, especially for large groups and families. And the fact that they allow outside food and drink (including alcohol) is a huge money saver. Is there one in the Dallas area?

3rd? There were once quite a few of them. There was another one in the Midway area besides the one already mentioned. There was the Campus Drive In at College and El Cajon Blvd. Just to name a couple.

Hate to say it but rarely saw the movie as the windows fogged up real quick while busy in the back seat.

Inland Oceanside, finally -- FINALLY got rid of that horrible drive-in that was falling to pieces and still serves as a horrible flea market with crap in it (despite promises for decades that great restaurants and other high-end development would at last come...).

Looks like the one in Escondido is doing fine.
