Last I heard median income in SD is about $65k and it's really not enough to live comfotably.(Last figures I heard were that only 3-4% of the people that lived in SD could actually afford to live there!) There's lots of good neighborhoods in San Diego County. Depends what you want. Your income should be suitable for a small average sized home but by no means will it guarantee a huge home and lots of land like it does in the mid-west.

I don't have kids but friends tell me the schools in Poway are good. There's hospitals everywhere but I cannot attest to which is the best. Maybe Scripps?

Wow...now compared to Orange County is San Diego "more affordable"?

You could afford to buy something on that salary...but it may not be what you want. Most homes in upper-middle class areas (you usually need to go to an upper middle class for the decent schools....) start in the fives for a small less than pristine home. Condos are cheaper, but you have to watch out for those hoas, they can be as much as 400 or more a month. Best school districts are poway district and some in encinitas, carlsbad are pretty good too. You may want to consider renting before you commit to buy something.

Lol I know I should rent first...I just really want to own my own home. I was also considering Temecula because the housing is much less and schools seem pretty good! The problem is I am looking into working for the childrens hosptial in San Diego, and my husband will be working there also...and I heard the commute is crazy!! Ahhh what to do what to do...

Commuting from Temecula to Children's would be horrible. With 100k income you can comfortably rent or even buy anywhere in the vicinity of the hospital. The area is not new or upscale but IMHO quite livable.

Yes, San Diego is a lot more affordable than Orange County. If you compare two similar houses with roughly the same schools in SD and OC (Mira Mesa vs. Lake Forest, RB/RP vs. Irvine), the house in OC will cost 50% to 100% more.

Yes I am very familiar with OC but I could never bring myself to live in such an expensive area...I would hate to be house poor. Not to familiar with san diego so I guess I just need to plan a trip and explore my options. I have heard so many good things about san diego, and the pictures (thread) are beautiful. But all in all if I do decide on temecula I would only be an hour away from san diego so I can enjoy all the beauty!

With gas prices only increasing, you would more than make up for any savings in living costs with the extra cost of gas, not to mention your time.

I have to second the above opinion. I have been informed by some friends in SD that premium gas is over $4.00 and just so you have an idea- I used to commute from Oceanside to downtown SD and it took an hour on average to get there even thought the trip was like 40 miles. A true San Diegan will plan their day around traffic unless they are fortunate enough to live close to their work, etc.

Forget Temecula. I have a friend who used to commute from there and it would sometimes take over 2 hours one way! (Lots of traffic, construction, and accidents).

If you want nice but small look at la Jolla (It's not even a little cheap) but it's a fairly decent area. If you need a realtor, I know someone who only works SD and is familiar with the area that I can refer you to. (just shoot me an email)

I would try looking in Rancho Penasquitos. It is suburban and established (built 70's and 80's). You could find single family housing in the 400-500 range there. Traffic on 15 at rush hour can be a drag, but the distance wouldn't be too bad. The Sharp Childrens hospital is not too far from there.

Poway is also an option, they are known for good school system, but it tends to be more expensive and somewhat rural.
