There's lot's of subpar Mexican in the mix though. And Filippis should be your only go-to for pizza.

My question for the "San Diego has the best Mexican food" crowd-

Where in Mexico are you seeing food that looks anything like the typical Mexican fare you find around San Diego?

Filippis is horrible - worst italian food ever! I'll never forget when I moved here and someone took me there... I was like... WTF is this? There are so many good Italian places in SD now... huge difference from the old days.

I have to agree, we tried it twenty years ago and thought it was stuck in the 1950s. There is fantastic Italian food all over these days. Cesarina, Cori Pastificio, Seneca, to name only a few.

Our favorite NY style pizza is Landini's, but we were told Long Island Mike's is the real deal (the recommender being from there). Neapolitan pizzas are everywhere too.

Another huge improvement from 25 yrs ago is the coffee, spirits, beer, and ice cream scene. So many independent artisans now.

I eat from burrito shops/ taquerias in SD often and like them just fine, very rarely will I go to a sit down Mexican Restaurant. I've never found a true Mexican Restaurant that impresses me in San Diego despite there being an abundance of them.

If I am craving a Mexican restaurant experience I will usually do that in Tijuana not San Diego, as the food is usually better, service is better and it is much cheaper.

I said pizza. Although I'll eat other things on their menu, you go there for pizza.

That's part of the charm. The menu and food is how I remember it from the 70s. It's a San Diego icon and pizza tends to be a regional taste phenomenon. My experience was hearing rave reviews of real Chicago pizza. Then I tried it. Nope. Same thing with NY pizza, or worse "slice". Same thing. It just didn't feel right because it's not what I grew up with. One of the giant NY pizza places, in NY, literally served what looked like Costco pizza.

I don't know if SD has the best Mexican food but I do know it's better than what you're going to get in, say, Oklahoma. I'm also not an authenticity snob. I have in-laws that constantly harp on that, no matter where we go; "this isn't *real* Mexican". Ok. Go tell that to the Mexican family who owns the place.

Back in the day though, the only reason you'd go to Baja to seek out "Mexican" food was because of the price, particularly seafood like lobster. It was worth the trip to Ensenada just for that however it wasn't a huge ordeal to do it either. These days, I suspect there aren't any deals to be had like in the past, plus it's a huge hassle to cross the border.

Love your posts but this is waaay off. Filippis LOL. Over cheesed mess. It would get laughed out of most pizza areas. And San Diego is not an area known for pizzas regardless what the natives say. Aside from maybe Bronx NY Style and Regents (UTC) Chicago Style.
