Can anyone tell me which Mexican restaurant in SD County has the best pork carnitas ?

Casa De Pico in La Mesa has excellent carnitas, but I need to try some new restaurants.

Any suggestions are welcomed. Whether it be an upscale restaurant or a non-descript taco joint. Just so the pork carnitas is good !

Try Carnitas del Michoacan on University Ave near College. It doesn't look like much but is the real deal.

We've always liked Porkyland in Barrio Logan.

OK folks, thanks for the suggestions and I'll make it a point to try all 3 of those places. Nothing beats a plate of pork carnitas and a couple of Dos Equis Dark cerveza's !

Another question. Is pork carnitas authentic Mexican cuisine or an "Americanized" Mexican dish ?

I know its pulled pork but is it really eaten in Mexico or just in the good ole' USA ?

Yes - carnitas is very much a Spanish-influence dish. When I visited my former boss in San Miguel de Allende, MX, their housekeeper made the most amazing carnitas. I know of versions similar to Mexican carnitas in Cuban and Filipino cuisine so I'm willing to bet that Latin American countries all have some version. When I was in Spain one summer, we also ate a lot of roast pork.

We rarely went to the La Jolla location because it was further away when we lived in the college area plus parking was a PITA. Also, there always seemed to be someone driving a huge luxury car parking in the handicap zone just to pick up an order. It's so hard to find wheelchair accessible parking so when someone tells me "I'm just picking up an order!" in a self-righteous way, I see red. It's not a pickup-deliver-zone people!!!!

Sorry for the rant. Yep - Porkyland. Yum.
