I love to hike and I wondering if any of you have any suggestions...

I normally hike Cowles Mountain, Volcan Mountain, Sweetwater, Torrey Pines (I'm not sure what those trails are called) and another place out on 67.

What are some pros and cons of places you visit?

Those look awesome! I've totally missed these. Are dogs okay at the two waterfall ones? My retriever is my hiking partner.

Get Jerry Schad's Afoot and Afield in San Diego. It's the backcountry bible for SD County.

Couple things to think about:

- It's summer time, stay out of the backcountry. Too hot and dry out there. Hike Tecolote Canyon... even Mission Trails can even be unbearable in August and Sept.

- The eastern Poway area has some great training hikes if you like bagging peaks. Iron Mountain and Mount Woodson have decent elevation gains and are easy to access from town.

- Mount Laguna has some of the best long-haul trails. Indian Creek Loop is excellent.

- In winter, head out to the desert. Some of the best stuff in the region is out there.

- The San Diego river headwaters from Volcan Mountain down through the SD River gorge is some amazing, unspoiled backcountry. That's where the Three Sisters and Cedar Creek Falls are. Watch out for poison oak, it is rife in there.

- If you want big peaks, check out San Jacinto and San Gorgonio, just to the northeast of SD. 10k+ peaks, Jeffrey pine forests, great vistas.

Have fun and stay safe. Remember to bring water!

I'm a frequent visitor to Mission Trails Park (Cowles Mtn, Fortuna Mtn, Kwaaypaay(sp)? I also like Iron Mountain in Poway. Others I want to conquer are El Capitan in Lakeside and Mt. Woodson in Poway, both of which are suppose to be pretty strenuous. As Sassberto already said, all of these hikes are too hot to do during the Summer months.

My favorite beach hike is walking from the top of Torrey Pines State Park all the way down to the beach. Good exercise and views to die for.

I love the hike to Cedar Falls mentioned by Piya above. The falls will not be flowing by the middle of summer so plan your hike in the spring. It's downhill on the way in and uphill on the way out, which can be strenuous. Bring plenty of water!

For about $10 you can get a copy of Jerry Schade's A Foot & A Field in San Diego County which has every legal trail hike on public land in the county. You can pick it up at any local book store and it is well worth the money. I've been using it since about 1994.
