I took the trolley for the first time yesterday, bought my ticket and rode it from santee downtown. Buy the time I got back on the wrong way, ended up circling the convention center and heading back to santee, I was pulled off the trolley when it stopped in El Cajon for my ticket expiring. It was an hour over.

They had at least 20 MTS rent a cops there checking people and ticketing. My friend from out of town and I had two standing in front of us at the benchs like we had just robbed someone. During the time it took for them to write the citiations two others walked up to make sure the situation was handled. I was treated like I was a criminal. When I asked if i could have my ticket back to show I did have one but it expired and i did not think to check and offered to buy another but was told I was not allowed to. He said it would be filed with the ticket but I didnt believe him so I took a picture.

I am at fault for not checking my ticket expiration but why dont they spread out all around the stops for those whom I did hear talk about riding without one "all the time" or the kid who was riding around with his friends joking about beating people up on the trolley if they looked like they might have money. He then joked with a MTS rent a cop that he hadnt done it again. Question, why would he be allowed to still ride ??

Sounds like you might have SD Pothead friends or some version of that type of creature. The trolley Security fare checks all the time! They are far from rent a cops due to the fact they are on a Public Transit System. The Patriot Act applies to the Trolley, if you step up to trolley security as if they were a mall cop you will most likely end up end hand cuffs bleeding. SDPD will tell you to go pound sand, as since it is a Transit System they have far reaching power. San Diego Sheriffs love the trolley because once you have patron on a fare violation the probable cause is established to do a FI (field interview). Allot of persons with warrants are busted on the trolley. A trolley ticket is a third strike for that matter, life in prison over no fare.

I would not let anyone tell me that I can drive my 911 to Vegas at 140mph because the CHP is not Checking. Maybe!!!!!!!!!just maybe......... if I was a pothead I might.
So.... it depends on what you were cited for. If the cite reads FARE EVASION. That is gonna be more money than a fare violation. Since you WILLFULLY EVADED THE FARE, FARE EVASION WOULD BE MORE APPROPRIATE.
You admitted in the post you willfully evaded paying.
When is your court date so I can show up and show the judge your post. It is not very smart to say that you willfully committed an infraction to the SD public. But then again no one ever checks anything, so go ahead......do tell!!!

About the kid beating up and robing patrons....this is why it happen...............*San Diego Trolley Riders*

I just got busted yesterday for not having the right pass! I used to use an expired disabled pass id. Sure enough, the officers checked me at the encanto station, orange line, they were having a training situation and the rookie officer was real by the book. Gave me a citation, and confiscated my pass and ID! They usually just beeped it with their machine, and thats it...Not this time! My bad, I should of got it updated...The fine for the first offence is $75, the next one can be up to $500!
It says so on the MTS website. Just google MTS Fare Violation Bail, its right there in black and white!
So don't be stupid like me and think you will get lucky! LOL!
PS, I now have a normal pass, and will pay the whopping $5 a day when I need to use the trolly, which isn't often, thank god! Also, the normal monthly fare is around $70, less than the fine for the first offence....do the math..

The bus drivers are now requiring to see an id if you have a Senior/Disabled/Medical pass. The reason for that is due to the abuse of the price of those passes ($18). They are also checking at the trolley stations, and if you don't have an transit id proving that you're entitled to have that pass, it gets confiscated.

As a daily trolley rider during rush hour, I can definitely vouch for the fact that MTS Security checks passes at least a few days out of the week, if not almost every day.

Took the trolley about a month ago and they had an elderly women in civilian clothes checking tickets as opposed to the usual uniformed security people.

Pay the citation! Like any other citation, if you don't pay/dispute on time the fine will double and if you still don't pay, the courts will garnish your wages. Trust me, I learned the hard way many years ago that a trolley citation holds just as much weight as parking and traffic violations.

They are sneaky. The fine is not on the citation. You have to wait for it in the mail. Of course I will pay it immediatly once I get it and be done with it. I will make a copy of it. plus the money order I will use to pay it, and put it in my "stupid things ive done" file...I have been checked several times since I got my regular pass, and it feels good not to worrey....
