I lived in Sd for almost a year in La Jolla and did 90% without a car happily. I have a electric GEM car and my bicycle for 90% of the time (grocery shopping and beach hoping ) and for other 10%( traveling and going up north) i use my car. the bus are great and specially in UTC you'll be more than fine with all the amenities around. Cheers

Those "snow rollers" ARE NOT snow covered round hay bales. They are a rare natural occurrence when the wind flops some snow and keeps it rolling bigger and bigger until they get too heavy for the wind to push them any further. I'll bet you all of your property against mine that I am correct on those.

Back to the original topic of living car-less in S.D. now. It's easy depending on how and where in San Diego you live. Biking is good and good for you, just buy a bike that is made in the U.S.A. if you can.

Ironically my bike I have here in NZ at the moment is a Marin and has both "Marin USA" and "Marin County California" stickers...... but is made in Taiwan.

Thanks once again for the encouraging replies. As an aside how bike friendly are drivers around this part of San Diego? Cycling to work here motorists do tend to be blind when it comes to cyclists, so it can be a bit hair raising. It may take me a little while to adapt for car doors flying out at me from the right hand side rather than the left hand side! (We drive on the left hand side of the road here in NZ)
