So I just got an offer from a company, for a round 54000 a year (there is a bonus, but I would prefer to ignore that part of things). Based on that I think I'd be willing to spend around 1200/month on rent. I'd like to be about 20-30 minutes outside downtown at most, and if there is Trolley access that would be excellent.

If the place isn't amazing I don't care, I'm just trying get in an area where I won't get mugged. Any suggestions on where I can stay based on that?

You'll have lots of choices. Enough frankly that you need to be a lot more specific on what you want. 1 bedroom? 2? Big Complex or small? Newer auto based area, or older walkable neighborhood. Lots of young people, or families, or urban singles? Quiet or close to nightlife? Is sun a priority or ocean overcast preferred? We'll need more detail to help you.

Well, it's nice to know there's enough variety that I can actually specify the type of place I'd like to be in

I'm a single guy moving there, so a 1 bedroom would be good, I'm not sure about moving in with total strangers as roommates (if anyone has good or bad stories regarding this I'd like to hear it).

Ocean overcast is fine, I definitely want easy access to the beach if possible. I'm from Boston, so horrible weather is something I'm immune to. Overcast is for babies

I'm 22 and I'll be 23 when I head there, so I'd prefer younger singles over lots of families. Preferably closer to nightlife, but if I need to get away for a bit to knock down housing prices, that's fine too. As a note I'd prefer a more laid back night life, if possible. I wandered around the downtown area and while the Gaslamp district seemed pretty cool, it seemed more like a once month kind of thing over a regular occurance (at least for me).

If the place was walkable/bikable, that would be amazing, but I'm willing to use the car to get around. I need a car anyway to get downtown to work (though if I could bike there by some miracle I'd be ok with that). Also if there was trolley access that would be great, but again, it's not required at all.

The complex size I don't really care about, I'm open to either. I guess if it's a large complex It would help me meet people, but if it's a smaller complex I would definitely value the privacy.

Why not move to downtown? For $1200 a month you can find a one bedroom there. Then you can bike to work, go to the ball park, go to all the excellent restaurants, and do any numerous downtown things.

If not.... lets see. Stay away from City Heights- it sucks. Actually stay away from anything directly east of downtown and especially south- imo. Mission Hills might be a good place to look at. Old Town could be fun.

I like La Mesa north of the 8- especially over by Lake Murray. Its more of a quiet and relaxing place which is affordable and is 20 minutes from downtown. Maybe not the best place for a single guy though.

Lake Murray area is nice, quiet with actually alot of college students.

Another area you may like is OB or Point Loma. You can find places around there for that range...

Like everyone else stated, there are lots of great areas that would probably work for you. But, I would say the downtown (or near downtown) area would be great. It's great for walking/biking/nightlife, etc. I lived about a mile outside of the gaslamp district and worked near Horton Plaza. I walked everywhere ... spent a lot of time on the Embarcadero and at Seaport Village. It was GREAT! ... The only drawback then was that there weren't any grocery stores nearby ... but I've heard there is now a Ralph's downtown.

I dunno, I was looking at prices in downtown and they are definitely not 1200 for a 1 BR. More like 1500-2000, which is way out of my price range.

What are opinion on Pacific Beach?

Little Italy, if you're ok with the airplane noise, you'd like the best. But the planes literally have an approach directly overhead.
