Dry your eyes, and start looking ahead. You're not in a bad position at all--your tuition money was by no means wasted if you have a transcript with a decent GPA. That will transfer to most colleges and universities, and an AA shows you have commitment and fortitude. Go on SDSU's website and read about admission for out-of-state applicants and CA applicants. They just changed their rules, and it is harder to be accepted, but not impossible, of course. It may be a good idea to come here and establish residency first; the website should give you all that info. SDSU is a good school, and they will help you with housing.

How are you making a living now? Are you living by yourself, or with your folks? The advice of getting a job that will transfer is excellent. Just start working on a time frame. SDSU applications have to be in in early spring for the fall semester, I believe, (maybe much sooner, such as before Christmas--check it out) so in order to start in Fall '13 you should start making plans now. If you shoot for Fall '14, you'll have ample time to get a job that transfers and establish residency if that is the best route.

Good luck, and think positive. It's the right time of life for you to strike out on your own, and SD is a lovely town if you want nice weather, beach access and decent schools.

San Diego coastal weather during the summer is nice and cool. a little hotter inland. Still the best all around. Summer clothes: t -shirt. shorts and a light jacket for earlymorning/nighttime. Bring some light clothings and a few jackets. Have fun and enjoy exploring San Diego. :-)

Coming from the PI, you will probably be freezing! LOL Daytime temps are averaging from low 70s to low 80s, depending on how far away from the coast you are. Nights are in the 60's.....don't even think it drops into the 60's anywhere in the Phillippines, except maybe Baguio? Lots of Filipinos here, so you will feel right at home quickly. Good luck

Hello,
We currently live in Canada, but are thinking of making a move to Socal. We have young children (5 yrs) and are wanting to escape the weather where we are currently. We are not tied to SD specifically, but have heard good things about it.
I am currently in grad school with a Washington university. I attend school in Canada on the weekends and just spent a month in Spokane going to school on campus. I will graduate next summer with a Master's degree in counseling psychology.
My husband is a realtor and is very successful here. We have a great life, but the weather is getting gradually more troublesome and frankly, we're finding it more and more difficult to live with.
We like warm, sunny weather (75+), but want to avoid sticky humidity. We understand there will be a lot of paperwork to consider if we move to the US, so we want to find some place that will make it worth while.
Here is what we are looking for:

1) Sunny, predictable weather. We don't mind 4 seasons, but cannot stand long, cold winters. Mild winters of 3 months or so would be fine. We want to stay somewhere on the west coast.
2) My husband would need to find work in the real-estate industry. He is very talented in SEO and RE marketing, as well. Then he would have to make himself a specialist in that industry, so we could stay and work there, maybe indefinitely (get citizenship).
3) Good, (great) schools, with proven data to back them up.
4) Good standard of living
5) Friendly people

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Many thanks

Your biggest problem will be to get you visas that allow you to work here. Lots of people in STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) manage to do that. I've never heard of anyone in real estate being able to do that, but I've never really looked into it.

^^^ This.

Someone with young children and being in the real estate profession (realtor). I would NOT recommend San Diego unless you tell me that you have some major savings or some income stream that would allow you to generate cash flow each and every month.

There are TONS of realtors here in San Diego already and while there are definitely successful ones. Many of them have been here locally in the business a while and have a big network. "Marketing" isn't a good field to be in here and he won't make much money considering that it sounds like he has been a realtor and not some marketing guru.

I'm not sure how the market is locally for someone with a Psychology degree here is but you have to figure that there are a LOT of people that want to be in San Diego so there will be tons of competition. And getting the visa can't be too easy these days either considering your husband's profession.

There are FAR better places vs. San Diego in someone in your situation. Again, my opinion could change if you tell me you have significant savings or cash flow from some existing investment.

There are quite a few places doing SEO that are looking to hire. As far as marketing goes, someone who's got the technical aspect of it (SEO) down and who can relate that to marketing in general is going to be in demand. IBM recently did a webinar where they talked about how SEO people need to become marketers, so that's what's happening anyway.

I'm at a mid-sized software company, and we just hired a couple of SEO people because, well, we need them. Our software is selling well and someone's got to service the clients.

As far as there being no marketing jobs around here, I'm going to have to disagree strongly on that. There are many companies looking to hire marketing people. That's one of the indicators I use to determine whether to call in on someone. If they're hiring, they're prime candidates for a call.

If you listen to some people, it's still 2008 around here. Not so.

Hello gradmommy! :-) I love San Diego! there are lots of activities for children and family to do. Poway Unified School district is good. Del mar Unified School district is a little better. More home buyers are buying homes! Housing prices have been going up! Great people make a welcome and warm community so if you have decided to head to San Diego, I wish you the very best. Life is gooooooood. ;-)
