This article was from more than a year ago: Horton Plaza makeover | The San Diego Union-Tribune (http://copleynews.net/uniontrib/20081001/news_1n1horton.html - broken link)

The plans sound really excited. I myself think Horton Plaza seems a little bit trapped in the 80s, it feel dated and slightly gritty. I think if they glossed it up a little more and make it a little more 2010ish it would attract customers. Keep in mind, they don't plan to change the mall entirely, just give it a facelift.

Anyone knows what the status is on the project?

And then there was the whole idea of the UTC redevelopment project where they were going to convert the mall into a mixed use (residential, nightlife, dining and shopping) area which would have been extremely exciting, but I'm not sure if the project has stalled due to the economy.

I have heard nothing bout the DTWN mall project

UTC project is going to be awesome!!!I hope it doesn't attract upscale retail.I heard it was supposed to start around April 2009 and it hasn't started yet.

I think it's fair to say the tanking of the US economy and the tightening of the credit markets has greatly affected both of these projects.

Westfield, the owner of both UTC and Horton, have delayed the expansion/renovation of both malls due to the bad economy. It's too bad because they both badly needed it. They also had major plans to overhaul North County and Plaza Camino Real in Carlsbad.

They did a great job at upgrading and expanding Plaza Bonita in National City, though.

Here's the website for the "New" UTC (it's already been approved). Looks awesome reminds me of Century City Mall in Los Angeles, with a San Diego twist.

Horton needs it?I think it's fine to me.A little confising though

Plaza Bonita is one of the best malls in all of Southern California in my book.

It sounded good until I saw "San Diego twist".
