I am a 28 girl moving to San Diego, all by myself.. I don't know anyone in the are and so I am at a loss trying to figure out what area to live in. I definately plan to rent and hope to spend $1000 to $1500 per month for rent. I would like to be on or at least near the beach. I also would like to live in an area where there is alot to do right outside my door...things like shops, restaurants, parks, bars, etc...I recently lived in Dallas and if anyone is familiar with the area I lived in Uptown and LOVED it! Is there anything comparable in San Diego? Basically I want to live in an area where young professionals (late 20s early 30s) mostly live. I don't want a huge party town though.. heard Pacific Beach is like that! I would prefer to live by the beach but I guess more important to me is the type of neighbors and things to do close by. I need to be an area where I can meet people easily. Please help me!!!!

Where to live in San Diego...
Here's the deal. San Diego is geographically split up, but everything is relatively close by. The beach areas have a lot of young folks, but also a lot of bars and to some people's tastes, too much partying. Uptown/Hillcrest-- is an eclectic community. It is labeled 'gay' but that's a misnomer. You'll find more gay-friendly places and it is a community where the gay community has been concentrated, but anyone who likes diversity and cultural mixes-- would love Hillcrest/Uptown. It surrounds Balboa Park, restaurants, 3 miles from the harbor, 2 miles from downtown and all the entertainment/restaurants downtown. It is a sure bit for a single woman who wants to be safe and be able to walk out the door and find something to do. Downtown is pricier and still has a lot of issues to be worked out with parking, homeless and such. Still, downtown puts you close to the harbor for runs/walks...and easier transit, if that's your thing. All three locations-- would suit you well-- depending on your interests.

Thanks so much for the info... I have heard Hillcrest is a cool area. I guess my only issue is that if I'm moving to San Diego I want to be close to the beach and take advantage of the outdoors! I will be in the area in early June so I will check out the areas. Thanks again!

Take a look at the North PB, Bird Rock, Crown Point, and La Jolla areas. These are expensive areas, but are near the beach but more upscale and outside of the party areas.

I think that's a misnomer, too. You go two blocks north of electric Garnet Avenue and you have a tranquil village with people of all ages living about.

You're right, but still two blocks north of Garnet you will still get your lawn peed on from time-to-time, all night ragers on the block, screaming late night, car stereos, etc...
I would say make it more like 4+ blocks north of Garnet, especially on the more eastern side of PB... very quiet over there. The farther north you go, you move out of the rental zone and things quiet down quite a bit.

I don't have much more to add since you've already gotten some good advice, but know that most San Diegans live within 20-30 minutes from the nearest beach. Hillcrest, for example, is only 10-15 minutes away from OB and Coronado.

One suggestion might be the Point Loma area. You'd be close to downtown, beaches and to all the major freeways.
