Hello, I've been reading this fourm for a few months now and learned many things about San Diego. I'm 29 years old and I will be moving to the area soon (about 2 or 3 months) for work. I am originally from WI and currently live in SW FL. I've been researching apartments on apartmentratings.com and reading the posts on worst apartments/bad areas. I have found a few that sound pretty nice - Canyon Ridge, Tarra Nova Villas, and Scripps Landing. I don't mind being 20-30 minutes away from the beach, I just want a safe/clean/quiet area. I'm looking for a newer, clean apartment, around 900+ square feet and my price range is about $1200-1700. It's been very difficult looking for apartments online. If anyone has any information or advice, please let me know (especially you Sassberto - you seem to know San Diego pretty well!). Thanks!

I think for your price range you would be able to get a nice apartment. You might be able to find a nice house as well.

I don't know these apartment complexes offhand, any of those large north county complexes will be safe, clean, and reasonably quiet. Good enough place to start things out in SD. 1200-1700 should be a nice 1BR or a slightly older 2BR. As for houses, you really need to go to 2k+ unless you want to live in a funkier area. You might want to just fly out for a weekend and check out some areas to get a feel for what you want.

You'd be surprised at the houses you can find for less than 2k/month.

Hi PapaSmurf,

I was in the same situation as you. I am moving from NY to San Diego and it took me a while to find the perfect place, especially doing everything long distance. I singed a lease with Avion at Spectrum, they are very centrally located and I heard really good things about this complex and so far the person I am dealing with there has been wonderful. Check out their site www.avion-apts.com

The one bedroom runs from $1400 to $1590

Julie

I've been shopping North County to central city for the past month. $1700-$2000 seems to be the price for a good to great place in North Park. The range is a little higher in Uni Heights and Normal Heights, at least the better parts; more than a little higher in the best parts.

In North County, I saw a listing recently for a 3 BR in Cardiff for $2000. Maybe the house is really small or rental-scarred. I saw one for 2K in Encinitas. It said it was 1500+ sq foot house near El Camino Real (east Enc.) But you can find a good place for $2000 or close to it in San Marcos, Vista, Oceanside and Escondido. Even Carlsbad but it'll probably be east of the 5.

That's the general problem I found when I was renting (I always rented houses). Especially in the central SD areas, where houses are really old, they tend to have a lot of problems. Plus I am a bit snobby and I can't hang with the home depot melamine kitchens and taupe shag carpeting with brown splotches. About 3 years ago I was paying 1500 for a 1910 Craftsman in North Park. Great place but it had a TON of problems and the landlord's MO was to replace everything as cheaply as possible.
