Can someone please give me some info on a area/neighborhood in Oceanside.
I am looking at the area around Arrowood Golf Course off Vandegrift BLVD.

I've seen on some what I think are really nice homes off Douglas DR and Papagallo DR. Is this a nice safe area in Oceanside?

I see that this area is also close to Pendleton Marine Base.
Would that be a problem of any sort?
Maybe for traffic?

The back gate area has probably the most gang activity in Oceanside. That is near where an officer was shot and killed on duty not too long ago. The shooter was linked to one of the gangs in Oceanside.

Oceanside is just like many areas of Southern California. One side of the neighborhood can be perfectly safe with nice homes, and the other side could be the complete opposite.

Really? Wow, looks like a very nice area.
Thanks for the heads up.

We looked at a few houses in that area and some seemed nice and some were nice but the neighborhood had a bad feel to it, if that makes sense. Some places can appear to be nice but still be "bad". There are some good pockets there, though, so you really have to go check it out.

Personally, if you want to live in that part of Oside, I'd check out the new houses off of Benet, N of 76. They are all new and cookie cutter, but it feels really safe and the crime rate is low. We looked at a 4/3 rental there that was beautiful.

If you go to the Oceanside police web site, there is a link to "crime statistics" that will take you to a site where you can input an address or intersection and see all the reported crimes in a 90 day period. I used that and the Megan's Law site (for sex offenders) to help me pick a place here in Oside

Not a huge fan of Oceanside compared with Carlsbad and San Marcos.

Oh I completely understand what you are trying to say. That's why I asked my question. The the homes look really nice on the picture but you don't know what the neighborhood is like. Thanks for the advice.

Not knowing Oside, I'm not sure where I want to live yet. I'm trying to get a feel for the area before I dive in. I'm hoping to actually go down within the next month to start looking at some house.

Someone else suggest I look into San Elijo Hills.
I'm not sure how the commute would be.
It seems far.

Awesome! I'll have to check that out.
Thanks.

We just moved here from out of state, so I totally understand! I had never been here, either. It's tough to explain until you get out here and see for yourself. Are you looking to buy or rent? What type of home/community are you looking for?

If you want a newer suburban home, look for stuff in the "Rancho Del Oro" area and around Hwy 76 and Santa Fe. Also that area off Hwy 76 and Benet.

If you want to be close to the 5 and the train and the beach, look in the downtown/beach area, South Oceanside, or what is called the Fire mountain area.

Where are you commuting to?

I'm looking to buy in the $600-800K price range. I want a safe neighborhood that will give me a 20 minute commute to work. Work is going to be around the intersection of College and Oceanside BLVD.

I have no desire to be near the ocean. Inland is good for me.

If you don't mind, I'd like to PM you for more info.

Thanks

You'll have no problem, then! Plenty of stuff to choose from Feel free to PM me, I've only been here about six weeks but am happy to share what I've learned.

You can totally get a nice place with a short commute!

If you're going to be working around College and O'side blvd then you should definitely look at Rancho Del Oro homes and Fire Mountain homes. In RDO you won't even really have a commute and FM you'll have a 5-10 minute commute.
We live in RDO now and love it. There's a great YMCA here that is only about 5 years old and has a great gym with new equipment, nice pool and tons of classes. The neighborhoods are great here. Fire Mountain has some really nice homes in your price range and above.

Good luck!
