Moving with a friend who is attending college in San Jose, but I am a San Franciscan at heart. The problem is that the commute from San Fran to San Jose looks horrible! I currently live in a wonderful neighborhood in Los Angeles in the Silverlake/Los Feliz area and am really hoping/trying to find an equivalent/artistic neighborhood that has some nice boutiques/coffee shops that is closer to San Jose than San Fran, but would still be somewhat close to San Francisco for weekend trips. Any ideas? I have been reading other posts on the forum but they are a little dated. I'm concerned as it looks like none may exist that are decently close to SJ. Thanks!

That's a tough one. Los Feliz has so much to it.. the thing you have to understand is San Jose was a cow town until very recently. There just wasn't a lot of money to go around. In the past 30 years, all these high-dollar communities have popped up in response to the high-tech boom.. it's very different from Los Angeles' story. Possibly the closest thing in terms of geography and status would be Saratoga, which is an older, more upscale suburb to San Jose.

Palo Alto is probably your only choice that's between SF and SJ. It's a bit more bougie, though.

I'm confused - you want to be near San Francisco to commute for work, or just to jump up for weekend trips? Caltrain will get you from San Jose to SF in just about an hour if you get an express train, that's not particularly long IMO.

The only thing even remotely close to that vibe that is more to the south is Redwood City. But that is really a stretch.

The real deals up here are found in The Mission and parts of Berkeley and Oakland.

Yes, but Los Feliz is sorta bougie too. LOL

Anyway, I think Willow Glen might work all things considered.

As far as being close to SF. You should be fine no matter where you pick in SJ-no matter what there's going to be some traffic, but not too bad for an Angeleno.
