Hi long time lurker here

I currently rent in Walnut Creek and work in Concord. I want to buy a SFR in the safest place I can afford that is somewhat nearby.

It seems the only places that are really affordable near me are Brentwood, Discovery Bay, and Oakley. I have looked at some homes in Discovery Bay and they are gorgeous and new which I really like. It seems like a safe family oriented neighborhood too. I have not spent much time in Brentwood or Oakley, but have heard they are nice communities with good schools.

If you had a max budget of $150,000 - $175,000 would any of these cities be good to live in? Any dangerous areas I should know about? Is there good entertainment, food, shopping nearby? Any thoughts on these three cities would be greatly appreciated as I know very little about them.

Those cities are 100% suburbia. And very far if you need to leave to get to the immediate Bay Area.

I do understand the drive is pretty awful, but it might be something I just have to deal with. I am really looking for a nice safe community where I can afford a home in decent condition.

For that price range, to get a 'nice' single-family dwelling (house) in a 'nice' area you're gonna have to head pretty far E away from the coast & SF.

You say you've seen decent homes in Discovery Bay, etc. yet you didn't say if they were anywhere close to your budget (& I doubt they would be).

Sounds like you've got all the tools to research this on your own, and aren't providing us with much info to go on anyway.

All of those places are out of your price range if you want a new home. Those places in Discovery Bay are way too much. You're basically going to be looking at semi-decent parts of Stockton or Modesto on that budget.
