Let's Talk About West Oakland

Some key points from page 6:
  • Oakland is divided into 7 large council districts. 90% of all violent crime occurs within 3 of them.
  • High-crime is disproportionately concentrated in certain areas
  • There are many factors that affect individual crime risk
West Oakland is 1 of the 3 council districts that receives the overwhelming majority -90%- of all violent crime. So, is West Oakland dangerous? ghetto? high-crime? No! No! No! Or At least not entirely.

In West Oakland, there are high-crime neighborhoods. But there are other neighborhoods and small communities that are far safer. These neighborhoods are not really affected by the high-crime neighborhoods. For example, the Oak Center neighborhood, in my opinion, is the best neighborhood in West Oakland. It is also one of the largest neighborhoods in West Oakland. It's:
  • quiet, beautiful, and spacious
  • has multiple parks that hosts a great number of events like soccer games and practices.
  • stretches to the point where it is located within walking distance of West Oakland BART Station, West Oakland Public Library, and Downtown Oakland.
This is what Oak Center looks like:

Yup, I've been saying this. I'll contribute my own photo of Oak Center from about a year ago:

More about West Oakland

Even in the Prescott neighborhood of West Oakland, there are some high-crime areas. However, on the edge of this neighborhood, is a quiet community that stretches for blocks, that does not experience violent crime, and is ever growing.

And in the Acorn neighborhood, there are some high-crime areas as well. However, taking from the key points on page 6, Acorn and all other neighborhoods experience violent crime is specific areas. For example, Acorn experiences high-crime on 8th and 7th street between Adeline and Market. Here's a picture of a map of Acorn. The map is zoomed in, and has black dots to show exactly where the violent crime takes place.

So not only does violent crime depend on council district and neighborhood, but it also depends on a block by block basis, thus making it heavily concentrated. In Acorn, for example, the violent crime rate for 8th street might be high, but the violent crime rate for 10th street might be extremely lower. As a matter of fact, here are some pictures of other, safer parts of Acorn.

Oakland Chinatown - Top 10 Places to Celebrate Chinese New Year

Much different than nearby San Francisco, Oakland's Chinatown is a compact neighborhood integrated into downtown. "It feels less touristy, a real place." Tsui says. She likes the Friday farmer's market. "It's jam-packed with fresh Asian produce."
