If you want to have a life threatening experience, certainly, going into the hospital qualifies.

I'm having a hard time finding empathy for Striking Bay Area Nurses.

Times are difficult all around and the Nursing lobby has carved at a very successful niche in the job field.

My understanding is they are the only professionals that must be paid overtime wages irregardless of income... it is in the employment code... often the Doctors complain because for the most part, they are considered exempt... I know two Docs that now work as Nurses.

Starting pay at SF general for a new Grad several years ago was over 100k.

They are used to having multiple job offers, being solicited by head-hunters and getting sign-on and relocation reimbursements.

Few other jobs will hire a person willing to work only a few days a week... or allow flexible work schedules such as three 12 hour shifts per week.

I work with highly skilled nurses that have two jobs and earn 200k...

No one likes give backs or being asked to contribute to Health Insurance and Retirement programs...

I just hope the Bay Area Nurses really thought this out... the support of the public would be a terrible thing to loose.

By the way, I'm not a fan of Sutter Hospital either.

The patient died because a nurse made a mistake.

My RN instructor says every nurse has made a medication error at some point, and those who say they never have are lying. Everyone makes mistakes at work, but unfortunately when a nurse makes a mistake it can kill someone.

It does happen... thankfully, fatalities are rare.

Look up the record for any Hospital and you will find errors... anything from meds to wrong site surgery.

California provides for license by endorsement (reciprocity)

To qualify for endorsement (reciprocity) into California as a RN, you must hold a current and active license in another state or Canada, have completed an educational program meeting all California requirements, and have passed National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) or the State Board Test Pool Examination (SBTPE). The Canadian Comprehensive Examination is not acceptable. If you do not possess these qualifications, you do not qualify for licensure by endorsement and must apply to take the examination instead.

I have no specifics about the nurse referred to in the article.

The absence of proper credentials would subject the Hospital to severe penalties...

A spokesman from Sutter Summit stated the person involved meets State Standards for employment.

Hospitals are different by their vary nature... they cannot just close close doors and send patients home or deny treatment in emergency conditions.

What choice is there but to put in place a contingency plan when thousands of Nurses strike in one area?
