Hi All-

I mistakenly posted this in the main California thread. I am re-posting here. Sorry for the double post.

I recently have been offered a great job in American Canyon. The problem is that I currently own a home in Santa Rosa in the Bennett Valley area. I am curious about the commute? Is it tolerable? I currently commute from Santa Rosa to the south end of the city (right next to the ballpark), and it is hellish. The only benefit is that I carpool so we can take advantage of the commuter lane. Still, it averages about 1 hour and 30 mins each way - 3 hours total. I am just hoping that it is not going to be more of the same. Thanks in advance for any replies.

I used to know someone who commuted from Santa Rosa to Vacaville for work. He said it took about an hour and 15 minutes and was a pain because he drove on not-well-lit country roads. American Canyon would probably be a bit shorter of a drive. It doesn't sound like a commute I'd want, but it sounds possibly an improvement over what you're doing now to SF. Any chance you can flex your hours to work four 10-hour shifts?

That is definitely worth asking. I will bring it up to the hiring manager. Thanks for the response.

On Hwy 12 that commute would have its moments but would probably be far lower stress than the typical North Bay / Far East Bay / Far South Bay commutes into the Bayside areas where most jobs are.

That is a good point. The commute into/out of SF is really stressful. The 101 is pretty hectic, and then driving through the city (especially tenderloin) is annoying to say the least.

Santa Rosa to American Canyon is easy. Just take either 101 to 37 as if you are going to Vallejo and get off at the american canyon exit. It is not a bad commute. If 101 is backed up at Novato just take the lakeville highway exit from 101 and it will take you straight to 37. Way better than sr to sf. I don't know who is talking about country roads or why, though 37 has nice views of the san pablo wetlands.

My mom used to commute from Vallejo to Petaluma, and it didn't seem hellish. Like the above poster mentioned, Old Lakeville Highway to 37 was the way she went.
