I always liked the original Royal on Polk Street, and it seemed conducive to quiet writing. Same with Trieste in North Beach. I guess the older cafes are the way to go.

^True, it worked for me a few times. Chicks dig the "brooding intellectual" type in the Bay Area.

Default Bazaar Cafe

Bazaar Cafe is an awesome local coffeehouse in the Outer Richmond. Quiet with cozy decor inside (wooden tables, artwork on the walls) and a lovely garden in the back. It is located on California between 21st Ave and 22nd Ave.

thanks for the recommendations everyone. i've also been to a few others that were mentioned. I've been to Trieste in North Beach and somehow someone always wants to strike up a conversation and ask what I'm writing. I don't mind chatting at all though, everyone is always interesting and nice there.

But a funny thing happened, I went to Vesuvios and started drinking a beer. The music was loud, and it was very crowded. I went upstairs and pulled out my index cards just to brainstorm ideas. I put on my headsets and suddenly, I was writing! All the noise, the crowd and even the wobbly chairs for some reason weren't distracting me from writing. I think it may have had something to do with the alcohol that somehow put me at ease or something, as opposed to the coffee that gets me jittery and hyper, and completely distracted. I dunno, its very weird.

I'm still checking out all the other places that were recommended though. I just checked out the website of Bazaar Cafe and it sounds awesome! Thanks again all! Much love.

That said, most of my writer friends do not live in San Francisco, where the coffee shops are pretty much always crowded and noisy. The only ones who do write at Borderlands Cafe on Valencia (it's attached to the Borderlands book store).

Oh, various branches of The Grove can be nice, too. But still noisy and busy.

Alternately, you might want to work into renting a share in a co-working space. They're mostly in SOMA.
Well, I'm not a writer per se. I'm writing a screenplay that I want to make into a movie. I don't make money off of what I'm doing and I don't have to meet a deadline either. I just need a bit of inspiration. So I don't think I'd be able to rent a co-working space, since all my money I'm saving will go into my feature film. But I'd been meaning to go into Borderlands Cafe. It's always something trivial that keeps me from going in, like not having any cash since I think I'd seen they don't take cc. Thanks for the recommendation!

Epicenter near Whole Foods in SOMA is pretty good. If you're lucky, you might see my sexy self there on a Weekend afternoon.
