I have an opportunity to take a job in Dublin. We can spend around $600K on a house, can anyone help with what can I get for that (i.e. square footage, age, lot size)? Does anyone know what the foreclosure market looks like? Also, I am interested in what the property tax and vehicle tax (or any other taxes) are currently?

Thanks in advance,

Use a traditional realtor type website: realtor.com, zillow.com, trulia.com, movoto.com or whatever works for you... This will give you the housing costs and what you get for that money.

There are not as many homes or foreclosures on the market as there were in the past few years.

Home prices correlate with school performance so I would look at the schools too for resale even if they don't affect you as of now. So schooldigger.com, schoolperformancemaps.com or greatschools.org.

Dublin, Pleasanton, and Livermore should work for you at that budget. Also maybe San Ramon and Danville, they aren't as convenient as Dublin/Pleasanton for getting to jobs in San Francisco (no BART or direct highway access) so I think property prices might be a bit cheaper there.

Nice Townhouses should be in your range. In Dublin $450 to $500K will get you a 1100 to 1200 sq ft SFH rancher about 40 years old that may need updating.

At the top of your price range in dublin you can get a larger 40 year old updated rancher sfh at around 1900 spft or you can get a new/newer home/condo with no yard or almost no yard a hoa dues. Or in the $400 to 500k ranger you can get a smaller 40 year old rancher. In Livermore your money will go a little farther. it all depends what you want a newer home with a hoa and less property or an older home with no hoa dues and a bigger yard and maybe a pool.

I did a search and found 2 in the upper price range like justinbro2002 suggests, but they were a bit smaller and look to have not the best lots. One next to an apartment and the other on a corner. Also the market has been pretty tight so if it says $600k there is a good chance it could go for more than asking. A realtor friend has lost several deals for his buyers because they all got outbid.

This is true and untrue. I like the south part of Livermore which generally has a higher cost for the housing. Look at the school ratings and you will see which are the nicer neighborhoods in Livermore. A 3/2 1400 sq ft (1970's ish) in the Sunset area is 500k plus. 4/2 in the same area is usually 600k and up. Newer houses are above that on the south side of town but definitely if you have 800-1mil that will go a lot farther in south Livermore than Pleasanton.
