Or do I have to go to LA? Also, is it true that you don't need a car in San Francisco but you need one in LA?

LA and NYC are the places to be for film. In SF there's nothing comparable. The one thing that gets filmed in SF seems to be car commercials, but I's guess the firms making the ads are from LA.

No, there are a few big ad agencies in San Francisco. Several big car accounts are based here, along with other categories. Lots of commercial production happens locally, but yes, LA production companies even get the majority of jobs that originate in SF.

SF is a popular location for feature films. Those are typically LA companies with some local hires to balance out the cast and crew.

Default film

There's Pixar and Lucas films (which just sold to Disney), but that's about it.

East Bay is big for documentary work. I don't know if there's a plethora of regular paying gigs though.

Specifically, if you're focused on animation (Pixar) and special effects (Industrial Light and Magic), it's pretty good, but other than that, not as much as down South. Disney bought Pixar from Steve Jobs, with the proviso it stay in Emeryville (away from Disney's main base), to maintain its culture and relative autonomy.

Incidentally, Disney also has Disney Interactive, which is the gaming division, over in Palo Alto.

If you're focusing on the west coast, L.A. is the city to be in. Yes, you'll need a car.

As others have mentioned, there is Pixar and Lucas Films, but the bulk of the film industry is in L.A.
