I'll also add that you'll run up extra expenses in bridge toll fees ($5 westbound) and potential for muck-ups on the bridge so it's not really worth it - as jade408 put it well.

i thought of San Mateo cuz i heard food is pretty good there and i have a weak spot for chinese food and food in general. Its also closer to Pacifica Beach which seems like a spot i would like. Would San Mateo have more diversity than Walnut or Danville?

Is there a safe and fun neighborhood in Oakland?? What are yalls thoughts on Claremont too??
I would think that would be a really long commute. Depending on what bus you would need, there are a lot of buses that stop at the Walnut Creek Bart Station. IF you lived in Walnut Creek, and IF your bus runs from WC to SR, the commute would be pretty good. SF to WC to SR sounds like a crazy/long commute. I know it's usually a 35 minute BART ride from SF to WC, maybe 30 minutes. I lived in WC for 7 years and commuted to SF for work.

Yes, the food offerings are great in San Mateo. And it is more diverse than Danville and possibly Walnut Creek, though I don't know for sure. However, the commute would be more of an ordeal so it wouldn't be worth it. Better to drive a little further on the weekends to the beaches than every weekday on a commute.

San Mateo would be a great choice. It has the best downtown on the peninsula with authentic Chinese and Japanese food in addition to many other types of cuisine. It is close to Millbrae which has the best Chinese food on the peninsula. It is a 25 minute non-rush hour drive to SF. It is an easy drive to the Pacifica beaches on the 280 and also to Half Moon Bay on the 92.

In additon San Mateo is close to all the other little downtowns on the peninsula. Burlingame has an "upscale" downtown. San Bruno is the opposite of upscale but has a casino. South San Francisco is diverse and is getting more authentic Chinese restaurants in addition to some authentic Mexcian & South American ones.

San Mateo would be an easy reverse commute over the bridge and then up Crow Canyon Rd. straight to San Ramon. I would not live in Walnut Creek because it is too hot during the summer.

You like chilly, windy, and foggy beaches? Just wasn't sure if you were aware how chilly the beaches are here. I just don't see why anyone would choose to live in San Mateo and commute to San Ramon as it doesn't offer anything more other cities closer to SR do.

San Mateo offers a lot more than the cities closer to San Ramon. First it is an easy 25 minute drive to SF on the weekends. Compare that to the traffic jams in the tunnel and on the Bay Bridge coming from Walnut Creek. Secondly in the summer when San Ramon is 90+ degrees San Mateo will be a perfect 75 or maybe 80. Also if one likes Chinese food it is dim sum heaven in Millbrae plus there are some authentic northern Chinese places in San Mateo. San Mateo even has a Japanese style Chinese restaurant, something rarely seen outside of Japan.

I see the only reasons to live in San Ramon or the nearby cities are the "10" rated schools and the cheaper house prices compared to the peninsula.

No it doesn't. It has less amenities such as shops, restaurants, and nightlife compared to Downtown Walnut Creek. I would think a young professional might appreciate some decent nightlife. There isn't always traffic going towards SF either and you can be in the city in 25 minutes from WC as well or a 35-minute BART ride. BART is way more convenient than Caltrain too, especially on weekends and actually drops you off in the heart of SF and not on the edge of downtown.

Also you have Oakland and Berekely close by which offer more than any other cities along the Peninsula. The East Bay could be a stand alone metropolitan area, the Peninsula couldn't.

Weather is subjective, plenty of people like the warmer weather in the outer East Bay plus it's nice to have warm summer nights which are far less common near the bay.

The only reason I see to live in San Mateo is if you work in the area or don't like warmer weather. Why pay a bridge toll to live in a suburb that doesn't offer anymore, and less arguably, than other suburbs and cities closer to San Ramon?

I don't quite believe it is such an easy commute. Crow Canyon Road is a winding, two-lane highway that receives more than its share of road accidents, and is heavily traveled because of its shortcut between 580 and 880.

Sure, San Mateo is a great place to live and it's got a lot of great Asian restaurants in the area (totally agree about Millbrae), but for me, I'd trade that off for an easier commute/not having to pay the bridge toll.

I recently moved to San Francisco and commute to Martinez. This is a reverse commute where you pretty much just go North when you hit 680 in WC vs south to San Ramon. People are shocked when I tell them my commute, but it really isn't that bad. I typically work roughly 645am-415pm. The commute in the morning is traffic-free and about 35 minutes. In the afternoon it typically takes about 45-50. (Giants /49ers games can make it bad from what I hear though.) A little backup at the tunnel and a little backup at the Maze, but you learn the tricks to speed that up.

FYI, I am 25 and I lived in Walnut Creek for my first two years out of college. WC is very quiet and suburban. I was not a fan of the nightlife scene in WC. Was kinda trashy for my liking.
