Do a search on Craigslist. Key in "North Berkeley", "Berkeley Hills", "Elmwood", to check a few good neighborhoods.

So how does the East Bay area compare to the DC suburbs in Maryland in terms of cost of living, etc.?

You know your region better than we do. Maybe you can compare from the info on the Bay Area we've given you. I was in that area a few years ago. Groceries cost about the same. Gas in CA is higher. You can compare rents on Craigslist.
