Hello, title says it all.

I'll be visiting relatives in SF for about ten days - I'll be on my own seven out of the ten days - and I was wondering if the Muni-Cable Car City Pass ($84) would be the best decision in terms of value.

Also, anyone have any good bars and cheap restaurants to suggest? Any "must see" visits within the city?

Fare on buses (but not cable cars) is $2.00, and you get a transfer that is good for 1.5-4 hours (seems to depend on the mood of the driver). $84 is a lot of bus rides, and may be more than you would spend if you pay for each trip individually. You'll need exact change (which can include bills), by the way.

The Muni and Cable car pass is $28 for seven days. The $84 one includes admission to a museum, an aquarium and a cruise. Is is only a good value if one has definite plans to do those things.

The best value is to go to museums on the free days.

Is the seven day pass part of Clipper? I'm looking at the SFMTA website and it seems to be the case - I just want to make sure.

Yeah, unless you're planning on going to the museums, don't take the $84 one.

What kind of bars do you like? There's a whole range. I'd recommend:
  1. Smuggler's Cove (tiki bar)
  2. Zeitgeist (dive bar)
  3. Alchemist (steampunkish)
  4. Noc Noc (what would happen if you tried to make a Beetlejuice themed bar)

If I were listing "must see" places, I'd go to:
  1. Twin Peaks - great view of the city
  2. Crissy Field - great view of the Golden Gate Bridge
  3. Golden Gate Park - probably one of the best city parks in the US
  4. Ferry Building - Transit center turned upscale market
  5. Alamo Square Park - the picture I'm sure you've seen on a million postcards

I would add to the "must see" places - The Cable Car Museum & Chinatown, Lombard Street, Coit Tower, Ghirardelli Square and Fisherman's Wharf.

If you intend to use public transit here, I strongly recommend shelling out $3 for the valuable but little advertised SFMTA system map. You can buy it at the Powell Street cable car ticket kiosk, at Powell and Market. It shows all the routes, and also lists service frequency on weekdays and weekends.

I've worn out two of these maps so far, and nothing I've seen on a smartphone is a substitute, at least to my tastes.
