I wouldn't go that far - when I think of real tech companies, I think of the silicon in silicon valley... The actual technology that allows these service oriented companies to exist.

SF proper actually has quite a bit of old hi-tech, such as Dolby, some avionics and automation companies, but new startups are mostly web oriented stuff.
