Not happening in SF. Try Oakland instead.

It is pretty tight. Transit could easily hit $200 depending on where you need to go.

$2000 better be take home pay.
There's a bit of hyperbole here. But as Jade illustrates above, you can of course can make it on $2,000 if all you want to do is rent a room in someone's house/apt.

The question, then, really isn't "is it possible?" But rather "is worth it to you to do so?"

Specifically, depending on your current lifestyle and expectations of what you need to be "happy", you might have to make sacrifices to make it work. And you'll have to decide for yourself whether these sacrifices are worth it.

If you want to also save money at the end of each month, that <$1,000 won't allow you to do everything you might want to do. You'll notice there are a lot of well-off people in SF (and the Bay Area in general), and once you start making friends they might start asking you to do things with them. Trips, concerts, eating out, etc. Just be aware of what you'll be giving up to get by in SF on that salary.

Granted, there are TONS of things to do around here that don't cost much (or anything at all). I partake in these types of things all of the time (e.g. hiking, biking, Hardly Strictly (free concert in GG park), going to the many city parks in SF, strolling through the many different fairs/farmers markets/public events that are held year-round in the Bay Area). One of my favorite things to do on Saturdays is to walk from one end of SF to the other end. It is quite interesting to explore the city this way and (assuming you don't buy anything/much on the way), is a pretty cheap way to pass the time.

So again, just think about what it means to live on that money here. It can certainly be done, you won't be living in a dumpster...but you also won't have the stereotypical SF lifestyle...which is why people are coming in here with their statements about "needing" 6K (or more) to just "live in SF".
