Alameda is fairly unique in terms of feeling both small town, walkable, decent transit, and a old mix of single family and multi-family residences. It is also diverse and not very segregated.

So it is pretty rare in both form and function.

It feels slightly east coasty to me (in terms of looks). Connecticut crossed with Mayberry.

I was responding to the post by eureka1 that was basically saying that Alameda is the only nice place in the Bay Area.

@ mstnghu2, I've sound some people in the South Bay to be rather ignorant of the East Bay in general. All they know is Oakland is crime-ridden and UC Berkeley, and they know little of Orinda/Alameda/Walnut Creek or other places. I sort of feel Silicon Valley, and I'm not knocking it, can be like its own big world, since it sort of far from Oakland/East Bay. At least SF/Peninsula/Silicon Valley are more interconnected. Or is this a wrong theory everyone?
It's true that it's a much bigger area than transplants think. These are separate cities, not just neighborhoods. If you live in SF, you may know absolutely nothing about Alviso, for instance.

I lived in Santa Clara for the last 10 years (before moving to Redding in November), and never once went to San Mateo, for instance during that time. I'm sure I did as a child way back when, but never since I moved back to the Bay Area. It just wasn't in my world. I hear it's really nice, too, on these forums.

So, no, it doesn't surprise me that people who live and work in the South Bay don't know about the East Bay and vice versa.

My husband and I always say the same thing when we drive in either place. Very similar to PB, but not as many college aged kids hanging around, so there aren't as many beachy bars as such. But the neighborhoods have the same feel.
